Re: The ultimate question!
Fri, October 17, 2003 - 1:38 AMHa-ha-ha! favorite pasttime - trippin' at the WDW! You know, TOT can officially be called a rollercoaster, I suppose. It rolls and it coasts, right? Eh, you're right - it's a drop ride, but some great freak-out, huh? Rock 'N' Rollercoaster is a sweet little trip - have you been down to Islands Of Adventure on a bender? Whoo lordy! The Hulk will raise the roof everytime! -
-
Re: The ultimate question!
Thu, October 23, 2003 - 10:43 AMSpeaking of the TOT. Do you know the best place to ride the TOT? It's in the back row in the asle where you have a seat belt but no lap bar. They often don't fill it unless they are busy. You would think the seat belt would be less thrilling, but you are just there, out in the open. When you drop, you float up and are just held down by the seat belt w/o touching the seat. -

Re: The ultimate question!
Tue, December 23, 2003 - 11:09 AMwell we just got back and rode the new ToT with the new seating and such.. they got rid of the 'jump seat' as it's been called. and everyone has their own seatbelt which made me nervous.. but the ride was actually smoother than before with just the lapbar..

Re: The ultimate question!
Fri, October 17, 2003 - 7:42 AMWooden is my favorite! I like the feel of the wooden track. And riding an old wooden rollercoaster is enjoying pure "Americana" at it's finest. Living where I live (Seattle), I am very short on coaster options. I am thinking, one of the next times I visit my parents back in Philly, I am going to take my own Coaster tour. I really want to hit Cedar Point in Ohio and a few others in that Mid-Atlantic area. Last visit, I did get to enjoy the Coasters (and chocolate!) at Hershey park in Lancaster, PA. I went there every year as a kid. Fun! My preference for coasters are high hills and big drops. I actually prefer ones that don't go upside down, although I am certainly not opposed to them. What does it for me is dropping from a high hill. The only things in life that can compare to that feeling are sex and chocolate!!! -

Re: The ultimate question!
Fri, October 17, 2003 - 10:24 AMHi Christine! I'll have to agree with you on wooden! It doesn't matter how big they can build the steel monsters - even a 60 foot tall wooden coaster has the sense of danger built right into it. PA is a great state for coaster touring - all through Dutch country are a handful of trolley parks like Dutch Wonderland and Kennywood Park that are close together, GREAT classic woodies there! Then into Ohio, you've got Geauga Lake and you'll simply go nuts at Cedar Point. Ever make it down south of you to California?

Re: The ultimate question!
Fri, October 17, 2003 - 7:49 AMThis is an easy one: STEEL. I have given up riding wooden; they give me a headache very time, unless they are brand new. Steel is so much smoother and so much more can be done as far as looping, etc. Yes, Son of Beast has a loop...I'll probably ride that one if I ever get there. But for me, it's steel all the way. -
-
Re: The ultimate question!
Fri, October 17, 2003 - 10:26 AMWelcome, Peter! Aww - that's a shame that wooden coasters are out of your vocab, they're so primal. But I do hear that Son Of Beast is one of the smoother ones out there, at least after they did some extensive retailoring of the trains. What's your favorite steel beast? -
-
Re: The ultimate question!
Wed, October 22, 2003 - 5:47 PMMy favorite steel beast? That's a tough one. I would have to say any of the Deja Vus at Six Flags. They are very intense. Goliath at Six Flags Magic Mountain was also very good. Mr. Freeze at Six Flags ranks right up there as well. I also Thoroughly enjoyed the dueling dragons at Universal's Island of Adventure, probably favoring Fire riding in the front.
I only got to ride Top Thrill Dragster at Cedar Point once. I need to ride it a few more times before I can pass judgement.
One problem I have with the new extreme coasters is that one is restrained so much, it makes the ride less intense (e.g. Millenium Force at Cedar Point).

Re: The ultimate question!
Fri, October 17, 2003 - 8:29 AMIt's gotta be steel for me. Wooden is just -way- too bumpy for me. I wind up coming off of the coaster feeling like I've been beaten to a pulp (though not a bloody pulp). -
-
Re: The ultimate question!
Fri, October 17, 2003 - 10:28 AMWhat's the last wooden coaster you rode? (I almost asked what the last woodie you rode was, and figured it was really too personal of a question) There are sure a lack of them here in Fla - except for Gwazi at Busch Gardens and a few indies down south. -
-
Re: The ultimate question!
Fri, October 17, 2003 - 10:30 AMLOL... ;o)
Yeah, it was Gwazi at Busch. I couldn't even pay attention to the thrill of it all... it was bumpin' me around way too much. -

Re: The ultimate question!
Fri, October 17, 2003 - 4:47 PMi love steel just because it's so fast and smooth and versatile. i am forever in love with the wooden CYCLONE at coney island though...it was my first ride back in 1986 and it was my son's first ride last summer when he finally reached the magical 54" mark!!! bring on the whiplash! -
-
Re: The ultimate question!
Fri, October 17, 2003 - 10:39 PMAllo Tuki! You've got it bad - like it both ways! You are blessed to have ridden the Cyclone - it's absolutely one of the greats! And what a first ride for a young boy! My first real coaster at the age of eight or something like that, was the Thunderbolt at Kennywood Park in West Mifflin, PA - HANG ON KIDS! good lordy, I thought I was gonna die! Whiplash indeed! LOL! Welcome to the tribe!

Re: The ultimate question!
Fri, October 17, 2003 - 10:36 PMI love Gwazi - they still haven't made another one like it. I think CCI designed that one. Schweet!

Tue, December 23, 2003 - 11:11 AMwe went back to BGT the Monday before Thanksgiving.. and Gwazi was down again! We had been there about 3 years ago and only rode one side because the other side went 101 and we had to head out.. -

Re: The ultimate question!
Tue, December 23, 2003 - 8:05 PMWell, that sucks, Pamela - so you still haven't been on Gwazi yet? That's one mean machine! -

Mon, December 29, 2003 - 12:59 AMwell.. as mentioned we have only ridden one side and that was about 3 years ago.. Sean says it was the "Tiger" side.. when we went to queue up for the other side it went 101 and then when we came back Monday before Thanksgiving neither side was operational!
Oh well. =)

Re: The ultimate question!
Fri, October 17, 2003 - 7:03 PMI don't think it really matters with me. Whether it's the Great American Scream Machine at Six Flags over Georgia or the Superman: Ultimate Flight at the same place, it's all good to me. If it can make my stomach merge with my liver and leave me feeling like I've been flying, it's GOOD! ^_^ So I guess I lean in-between. -
-
Re: The ultimate question!
Fri, October 17, 2003 - 10:42 PMGood answer, Tybee - you are an equal opportunity rail rider! Funny that folks that refer to the Great American Scream Machine refer to it as orGASM and that makes perfect sense. It's a beautiful ride! What do you think about that Georgia Scorcher near the front of the park? We were there in 1999 and it was nifty - but there's something about the classics that endure. -
-
Re: The ultimate question!
Thu, October 23, 2003 - 10:41 AMGeorgia Scorcher? That standup, correct? I didn't like it at first. It has taken me several rides (on serveral stand ups) to get the hang of adjusting the seat so the ride is enjoyable. The Scorcher isn't bad. I think I prefer the Riddler's Revenge at Six Flags Magic Mountain.
Oddly enough, I found the stand up at Cedar Point more scary the Millenium Force. Maybe be because I had already ridden the Millenium Force a couple of times and my nervious systems was over-stimulated. But I still think it goes back to the restraints. One is less secure in the stand up than in the hope-you-don't-have-a-full-bladder restraints of the Millenium Force or the Top Thrill Dragster.
BTW, the X Coaster at Six Flags MM was a disappointment. Looks amazing, but was a rather lame ride.
-
Re: The ultimate question!
Fri, October 24, 2003 - 10:48 PMEh, in my non-professional opinion, the Georgia Scorcher could have been better. It didn't send any special tingles through my body and it seemed as if it has less g-force on it than I thought it would have. It's a fun concept, but I believe that they could have done better on it.

Re: The ultimate question!
Sun, October 19, 2003 - 4:18 PMGotta love em both!!! Best wooden I've been on,is Mean Streak,at Cedar Point. Best steel,I think, is Milleniun Force, also at Cedar Point.Best adrenalin rush, has to be Top Thrill Dragster at Cedar Point. One of the worse so called coasters I have been on,was X-Flight,at Six Flags in Ohio, not to much fun, kinda stupid, and boring if you ask me. -
-
Re: The ultimate question!
Mon, October 20, 2003 - 12:53 AMWelcome Pam! Were the trim brakes on or off when you rode Mean Streak? It depends on the time of year, but when they're off - WHOO-golly, what a trip? I enjoy Millennium force but actually enjoyed Goliath at Six Flags Magic Mountain better:
www.darkstudios.com/c2c/082300.html
I'm looking forward to Top Thrill Dragster - if they can ever get it operating on a regular basis! -
-
Re: The ultimate question!
Thu, October 23, 2003 - 10:49 AMI'm with you, Bing. The Goliath at Six Flags Magic Mountain is better. I rode the front the first time, and they guys who got off dared me to ride with my hands in the air the whole time...wasn't quite that brave. Plus I don't see how one could...when you hit the mid-ride brake, the front car has started down the embankment and is essentially dead stopped (or feels like it) for a part of a second. I was sure if I weren't holding on, I would have slipped out and tumbled 100+ feet.
Did you ride in the front, and if so, did you experience the same thing? -
-
Re: The ultimate question!
Thu, October 23, 2003 - 2:28 PMYeah, damn that brake. Or bless it - since "The Toilet Of Never" is intense enough, I can't imagine how many G's it pulls with trims off.
I'm a back-seat kind of guy, and that was just rip-roarin' fun back there. Like falling off a building-fun. : )

Re: The ultimate question!
Thu, October 23, 2003 - 7:42 AMIn any other situation I prefer wood, but on a coaster steel is my preference. ;) I like wooden coasters but there are more *options* in the steel experience. (The one exception is the big white monster at Magic Mountain, which is probably my favorite coaster of all time, wood OR steel.) -
-
Re: The ultimate question!
Thu, October 23, 2003 - 2:30 PMColossus rocks! I worked there on a day-transfer one evening, just unloading and loading trains - but it was still a classic and I was part of its crew for a night. Sweet.
You know, there's Son Of Beast at King's Mills in Ohio, wooden coaster with a loop - how long can it be before they got 'em corkscrewing? Or hanging from wooden tracks?
Nah - that last one is just dumb. : ) -
-
Re: The ultimate question!
Thu, October 23, 2003 - 3:08 PMi gotta get to ohio...never thought i'd say that...but it sounds like the good coasters are all there! why i wonder.

Re: The ultimate question!
Fri, October 24, 2003 - 2:59 AMSomeday I HAVE to go to Ohio to ride...
A whole East coast tour is on my 'when I have money again' agenda. ;)

Re: The ultimate question!
Fri, October 24, 2003 - 12:30 PMDefinitely wooden coasters - one of my favorite rides ever was Ghostrider in 1999. Most steel coasters affect my tummy. Though 'Stealth' would be a close runner-up - I got off that one and couldn't stop giggling.
-
Re: The ultimate question!
Sat, October 25, 2003 - 4:40 PMWooden, definitely... you can't beat that old clackey-clack feeling of the woodies! -
-
Re: The ultimate question!
Wed, December 3, 2003 - 10:49 PMLooks like more woodies are being built this year, as opposed to steel coasters - when the official coaster openings of '04 are announced, we'll see if nostalgia or progressiveness wins out. : )
Then again - you can combine the two and get something like Son Of Beast - but I think it may be a while before we see the likes of that again. -
-
Re: The ultimate question!
Tue, December 23, 2003 - 9:55 PMI came late to this thread because I just discovered the tribe a couple of days ago, but I would definitely say woodies. Not that I don't love steelies too, but I need that airtime.
One of my favorites all time is the Cyclone at Lakeside Park in Denver. I could ride that thing all day, and often have in the past. And Ghostrider kicks massive butt. -
-
Re: The ultimate question!
Fri, December 26, 2003 - 3:08 PMAmen to Ghostrider - an incredible trip! Does Lakeside Park have a website? What other coasters do they have there? And welcome to the tribe, by the way! -
-
Re: The ultimate question!
Fri, December 26, 2003 - 5:07 PMLakeside is here:
www.lakesideamusementpark.com/
Lakeside is a very old, family-owned classic amusement park. Lots of very cool thrill rides, like a newly-restored Whip, Loop-o-Plane AND Roll-o-Plane, Dragon mini-coaster, Wild Chimpmunk wild mouse coaster, all kinds of stuff. Great little park, lots of neon and 1930s architecture everywhere and short lines even for the best ride there, the Cyclone.
The place was badly deteriorating a few years ago, but appears to have undergone a serious preservation effort lately. If you're ever out near Denver, skip Six Flags Elitch Gardens and go to Lakeside instead.
Here's a shot of the Cyclone in action:

Re: The ultimate question!
Sat, December 27, 2003 - 1:15 AMIsn't Elitch Gardens home to the transplanted Mister Twister? I heard a lot about this and have some video of it, but still want to ride it. The Cyclone looks thrilling from the shot you've provided though....nice drop! -
-
Re: The ultimate question!
Sat, December 27, 2003 - 2:15 AMUnfortunately Mister Twister wasn't transplanted. They just built a new woodie really nothing like Mister Twister and named it Twister II.
One of the worst woodies I've ever ridden. Only the Grizzly at PGA approaches it's awfulness. Mister Twister - the original - was fantastic, an original John Allen design worthy of the man's genius. Twister II acts and rides like it was designed by a UN committee.
Uh, sorry to disappoint you. I dunno, maybe I was just having a bad day when I rode it. I think I was spoiled by the Lakeside Cyclone at the time.
Here's the good news: Knoebels in Pennsylvania took the original Mister Twister plans (and the additions that had been made later on - all good ones) and built a very close approximation of that coaster at their own park. It opened in 1999. I haven't been on it yet, but all the reports I've heard of it are extremely enthusiastic.
As for the Lakeside Cyclone, I can't say enough good things about this ride. Still has the original NAD cars, no restraints (save for tiny leather seatbelts which can be unbuckled once out of the station,) dark tunnel, huge first climb and drop, and it maintains big speed and air all the way through the ride and lateral Gs on the final turnaround, with a series of excellent bunnyhops to slow the thing down before it chugs back to the station.
Incidentally, when Elitch was in its original location, people on the top of the lift on the Cyclone could see and wave to people on the top of the lift of Mister Twister, just a couple miles away. -
-
Re: The ultimate question!
Wed, December 31, 2003 - 2:46 PMThe story behind the park and the coaster (Elitch) is one of the strangest in amusement park history -
What do you think about the Thunderbolt at Kennywood?
-
Re: The ultimate question!
Sat, January 3, 2004 - 11:40 PMI've been on Mr. Twister, Twister II, and Knoebel's Twister, each at least 20 times.
Twister II is not worthy of discussion.
Knoebel's Twister is a worthy but temperamental ride. It isn't the solid performer that Mr. Twister was. Still, it's a good ride and while the copy was not accurate, the spirit remains.
Mr. Twister was a classic. It got there by endless tweaking both by John Allen and by Elitch's.
Also by the way, Knoebel's is IMO one of the best parks in the world.
