Not scary good. Scary as in "Not fun; I thought I was going to die."
Mine would be the High Roller on top of the Stratosphere in Las Vegas.

Re: Scariest Coaster?
Tue, December 30, 2003 - 8:18 PMMine would be The Grizzly at Santa Clara's Paramount's Great America. The lapbar came up after the first drop and we all though we were going to be on the five-thirty news. No joke.
Second to that - a traveling portable coaster at the L.A. County Fair that likewise refused to strap me in, and I had to cling to the side of the train. Lucky to be here! -

Tue, December 30, 2003 - 10:53 PMViper at six flags so. california... the restrain unlocked for a second then relocked during the corkscrew. Thought I was a dead man.

Re: Scariest Coaster?
Wed, December 31, 2003 - 12:27 AMYeah, that Grizzly is horrifying! I'm a pretty big guy, not fat, just 6' 4" and big, so I can't imagine what happens on that thing to people with 46" waists and such, and the attendant had to practically jump up and down on the lap bar to get it to close down on me. Incredibly painful during the whole ride, but at least it didn't come up.
The lap bar did come up on me once on Space Mountain. That was pretty scary. Luckily that thing doesn't go faster than about 20 mph.

Wed, December 31, 2003 - 5:02 AMAh, the Grizzly without a lap bar.
Good times, good times. ;)
That was a great example of people spontaneously coming together for a common cause... I can't believe we LIVED.

Wed, December 31, 2003 - 2:44 PMGad, on Viper? That's no fun, to say the least.
The Grizzly was made for little people, that's all I can say. Chris, I will say that coming to quick decisions around that 180 made us all a team in short order. I wonder if those two guys went to guest relations and complained as I suggested?

Mon, January 24, 2005 - 9:53 PMTravelling portable coasters scare the heck out of me. I've never been on one and don't ever want to. Can't trust how tightly those bolts are screwed in.

Re: Scariest Coaster?
Tue, February 17, 2004 - 2:54 PMI love coasters but so far I haven't had the guts to get on High Roller. My favorite Woodie is Ghost Rider at Knotts. X kicks major butt at Six Flags Ca. but the scariest was going on Colossus backwards when the lap bar came up and I had to hold on with one hand and grab my date from falling out with the other. Why we didn't sue beats me. I guess we were laughing too hard when it was over.

Re: Scariest Coaster?
Tue, February 24, 2004 - 2:47 PMpsyclone at six flags magic mountain. This ride is completely wooden, and sitting in the back, you feel all the jolts and bumps. The reason its scary is due to the horrible neck-bar safety device. In the back, you get bounced and jostled around so much, that your ears hit the bar. I thought my ears were bleeding by the time I got off the ride. -
-
Re: Scariest Coaster?
Wed, February 25, 2004 - 2:33 PMI used to work Psyclone - poor wittle coaster. It was designed wrong, half of the blueprints from the original Coney Island Cyclone and half from the Georgia Cyclone - the chain lift has to be in a special speed to launch the coaster around when it's empty, otherwise - it'll valley. It constantly shakes itself apart, which is why the ride is so rough around the helixes. I still love it - but you learn to ride with your head forward. Those neck restraints weren't always there. They added them after SF got paranoid about people getting injured, ironically enough! -
-
Re: Scariest Coaster?
Wed, February 25, 2004 - 2:39 PMI find that the neck restraints cause more injuries than prevent them, most of the time. I sort of suspect that most parks add neck restraints to coasters just to make the public feel better about riding them. -

Re: Scariest Coaster?
Tue, March 2, 2004 - 11:48 AMI love Goliath at Magic Mountain - but pulling the 4 g's during the helix made me almost blackout. The helix released just as I was about to go under! Yikes! -

Sun, March 7, 2004 - 9:39 PMMichael - I hear you on Flashback - it was a one-of-a-kind coaster from Intamin that just didn't go anywhere. while I worked at SFMM, we called it "Flashbroke" because it was always down. Nice ride, but it was kind of tough on you.
Melanie - I agree with you on Goliath too - the upwards helix, which we call the "toilet of never" can be a bit too much. great ride though.

Re: Scariest Coaster?
Tue, January 25, 2005 - 9:48 AMThe coaster at New York, New York in Vegas. The thing needed some serious maintenance -- it felt like the steel tracks were gapping in spots giving the train an unsure connection to the track at critical points in the ride.
