New to the Tribe...

Greetings, Gang!

Like the subject line says, I'm new to the Tribe, but a serious vet when it comes to coaster thrills! I believe my first ride was at the tender age of two and I've been addicted since. Personally, I'm a steel fan, but have experienced a hand full of woodys that rate WAY up there on my "woo-hoo!" scale. One of my Top 10 is the Thunderbolt in Kennywood. Awesome Woody.

Anyway, I just wanted to say "Howdy". I can tell I'll be happy here ;o)

~Tracy

P.S. Is anyone in the Tribe a member of Ace?

Welcome -- the discussion volume is quite low but pretty cool.

I've been in ACE since '93 but I'm likely to let my membership expire after this year.

      Hi tracy -

Welcome - yeah, like Eric said, it's low-flow here, but real dedicated coaster lovers nevertheless. I'll second your reckon for Thunderbolt as one of the ten best ever - you can't beat a first drop that steals you out of the station, right?

Anything going up this year that you're excited about?

My favorite bit about the Thuderbolt is that it seems to get progressively faster. Many other older wood coasters kind of limp home in the last bit, the Thunderbolt just keeps up the speed. The pull out of the ravine at the very end seems impossible but it always makes it.

The well-padded, dividerless NAD Century Flyer trains are an added joy.

On top of that, I think Kennywood's replacement of The Steel Phantom to Phantom's Revenge was absolutely brilliant. I can't wait to go back.

I think the coolest thing about ThunderBolt is that there is absolutely no lift mechanics throughout the ride. That first drop, right out of the gate, provides the forward momentum to get started and then the lay of the land causes the speed and locomotiin for the rest of ride! Genius!

Kennywood! What a gem of a park! Walking underneath the highway, your like, "What am I getting myself into?" and then you clear security and step into another time - a gentler, kinder place straight out of the early 1900s. OOOh, and I absolutely love that racer they have at Kennywood! What a great ride! But like I said, I'm a HUGE steel fan.

I could list out my favs at each park I've been too, but you guys would either be bored to tears or rip me for my choices... :o) But seriously - current fav steel coaster is The Hulk in Universal Florida... I can't wait to get back there!

I've never seen anybody rip up choices here. I think it'd be particularly silly given just how subjective this all is.

Kennywood, Knoebels, and Hersheypark are all within fairly easy drive with one-another. What an unbeatable combination!

Have you been on Six Flags New England's Superman Ride of Steel? That's my favorite steel coaster in spite of generally not caring for the park as a whole.

Rumor has it that the Kennywood Corporation is going to buy SFNE from Six Flags; but that's just rumor at this point. However, it it turns out to be true, I'll be doing a happy dance.

Also, Cedar Point has Top Thrill Dragster, Millenium Force, Raptor, and Gemini -- all bigtime favorites of mine.

Heck no. This isn't rec.roller-coaster. I love hearing about people's favorites, because it makes me want to go ride them all. And getting a real good description of one is almost like riding a coaster vicariously.

Damn, I really want to go to Kennywood now.

The Hulk is a great ride Tracy...My girlfriend and I just got back from there. We are junkies. left wednesday night from NC got there when it opened, rode till 5, then back home and and back to work friday! It was AWESOME! =) I think I like dueling dragons better at that park however.

I think my fav steel coaster though has got to be Appollo's Chariot at Busch Gardens Williamsburg. That ride rocks!

Just like my personal favorite (or favorite wooden out-and-back, at least,) the Lakeside Cyclone, which like Thunderbolt was also designed by a Vettel (Ed: Cyclone, nephew Andy: Thunderbolt - the redesign in the 60s.) For me that's an absolute essential, the ingenuity of the design which squeezes every last ounce of oomph out of the energy acquired from the first drop. Cyclone still has so much speed on the back end of its run that it has to use a series of big bunny hops (with nice airtime) right before the turn into the station to slow the thing down sufficiently.

I've been intrigued by Thunderbolt ever since I first heard of it, but I've never experienced it. It looks like there's a fair chance I'll be able to get out to ride it this year, though. Can't wait.

You will - beyond a shadow of a doubt - absolutely LOVE Thunderbolt. I'll tell ya... any coaster that makes you laugh with utter enjoyment from the time the release your car, until the time it rolls into station is nothing less then perfect.

            You'll see! :o)

            P.S. and we'll expect a full report!
